March 22nd of each year marks World Water Day. But what is it?

World Water Day started in 1993 as an annual United Nations Observance to celebrate water and raise awareness about the over 2 billion around the world living without access to clean, safe water. One of its main goals is to highlight and support the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which is water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Each year, UN-Water sets a different theme to focus on. This year, the theme is groundwater–making the invisible visible. Groundwater is out of sight, under our feet in deep aquifers, natural geological bodies of rock, sand and silt that can hold water below ground. According to the UN, “almost all liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater.” It is a vital resource for drinking water, sanitation, farming, ecosystems and more all around the world.  As climate change threatens above ground freshwater supplies, groundwater will become an even more important resource to us that needs to be used sustainably and protected against climate change and human-caused pollution.

What are some ways you plan to celebrate World Water Day?

We may be biased, but we believe everyday is the perfect day to celebrate water and be conscious of our role in using and conserving water. Here are some easy ways you can celebrate World Water Day:

  1. Learn more about World Water Day and groundwater. Check out worldwaterday.org/learn to learn about the importance of groundwater and what we can do to protect it.
  2. Take sustainable steps to conserving water. Check for leaks in any pipes, turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth or shorten your time in the shower. If you have a countertop AquaTru purifier, use your waste water in creative ways like floor mopping, pre-rinsing laundry, cleaning and flushing your toilet.
  3. Fill up with reusable water containers instead of bottled water. We love sustainable options like glass and stainless steel bottles.
  4. Support organizations providing access to clean, safe water.

At AquaTru, our mission is to uplift families and communities through access to clean, healthy drinking water with proven purity because we believe that clean water is a right and that an optimized life starts with access to clean water.
