Spring is in the air! Chances are you’ve probably got a few more deep cleaning to-do’s on your spring cleaning checklist. Remember, we can combine practices for both a clean house and a clean planet–here are a few ways to do exactly that:

  1. Use non-toxic cleaners. How ironic is it that we often clean our homes with toxic chemical products? Fortunately, an air filter can help to filter out dangerous indoor contaminants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but we can also help it out by shopping for natural and non-toxic cleaners.
  • When shopping, look for biodegradable, chlorine-free, and natural or plant-based cleaning products. Check for no- or low-VOC cleaning supplies, as well as those that are free of formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, quaternary ammonium, and sodium borate. Look for fragrance-free options, or those that use essential oils instead.
  1. Scrub away dirt, grime, and dust sustainably. What you clean with can help us clean up our planet, too! Instead of paper towels or microfiber cloths, reuse old t-shirts. Consider buying a mop, sponge, or brush that’s made from natural materials (like bamboo) and has replaceable heads.
  2. Make a DIY cleaner. If that list of chemicals has you concerned about what you might find on your supermarket shelves, make a DIY cleaner instead! It’s likely that you already have ingredients for a cleaner that’s just as effective as store-bought versions. It’s amazing what a little baking soda, white vinegar, or citrus peels can do!
  3. Use purified water for a natural air freshener. Speaking of citrus peels, simply simmer them in your purified water and, voila—you have a natural air freshener! You can also add essential oils to the water from your AquaTru to make a similar smell-good spray!
